VESA ( the Video Electronics Standards Association) recently introduced the DisplayPort v1.2 digital communication interface, with double the data transfer rate of v1.1, 21.6 Gbps vs. the current version’s 10.8 Gbps. The new version also leaps past HDMI by allowing support for up 4 monitors on a single plug, plus FullHD 3D at 120 frames per second and bidirectional USB data transfer rates of 480 Mbps. The new standard will be backward compatible to DisplayPort v1.1 capable systems.
"Displayport Version v1.2 offers a complete set of benefits and capabilities that no other standard can provide. It is completely backward compatible with DisplayPort v1.1a and requires no new cables or other equipment, making it the standard of choice across the industry," said VESA’s Bill Lempesis, in a statement.
The improved standard allows 30 bits per pixel, as well as 3840×2160 quad full HD resolution at 60Hz, putting super HD capabilities in the realm of home entertainment systems for the first time. Multiple resolution monitor support from a single graphics card on one notebook or PC will come as good news to graphics designers and video editors as well. Displayport 1.2 is also designed for upgraded audio capabilities; this includes support for HD audio formats like DRA, Dolby MAT, Blu-ray, DTS HD, as well as multiple audio channels, audio-video synch assist, and multiple audio synch devices with GTC (Global Time Code).
Displayport1.2 also adds two way data transfer between a DisplayPort compliant source, like your notebook, and DisplayPort 1.2 compatible display. For Among other things, this would enable your monitor to feed your notebook with data from USB ports connected to microphones and webcams over one cable. This means at least one less cable to worry about, always a good thing.
Interestingly, VESA has now given it’s vote of confidence for 3D home entertainment, by designing in support for 3D Stereo transmission and motion display of up to 240 fps in full HD. Since DisplayPort is an open standard, and manufacturers pay no licensing fees, adoption of the revised standard should be fast. Visit www.displayport.org for more info on DisplayPort.
