Jawbone’s UP4 Fitness Tracker Adds Mobile Payments
Jawbone’s long awaited UP3 fitness tracker is finally beginning to ship to pre-order customers. But the bigger news is that the company has partnered with American Express to give U.S. American Express Card owners the ability to tap to pay with the new Jawbone UP4 fitness tracker anywhere American Express contactless payments are accepted in the U.S.
Said Leslie Berland, executive vice president, Digital Partnerships and Development at American Express:
“In partnership with Jawbone, a leader in advanced fitness trackers, we have created a seamless payment experience all in the tap of a wrist. We believe this unique technology will delight our active, digitally-savvy Card Members in a powerful way and drive a new type of engagement at hundreds of thousands of merchant locations nationwide.”
The only actual difference between the UP3 and the UP4 is a little symbol on the band that lets you know where the NFC chip is. The UP3 wristband tracker features advanced sleep and activity tracking and heart health monitoring, in addition to enabling contactless payments. UP4 is also backed by Jawbone’s latest UP app and Smart Coach system, which helps people move more, sleep better and eat healthier.
Swipe your wrist near the payment terminal and your payment is instantly made. You can save one credit card’s info in the UP app. (iOS or Android) All data is stored on American Express’s protected servers.
“We’re delighted to partner with American Express to launch UP4, our most advanced and stylish tracker that’s small enough to wear 24/7,” said Travis Bogard, vice president of product management and strategy at Jawbone. “They provided the innovative and forward-thinking approach needed to create this new experience, combined with a sophisticated and robust payment system, and a wide range of supported merchants.”
Both the UP3 and UP4 pack a sensor for galvanic skin response, an accelerometer, a skin temperature sensor, a heart flux sensor, heart rate sensor, and respiration sensor. All of which keeps track of your steps, stress level, REM sleep, resting heart rate and calories, for $180. Add 20$ for the UP4, which is promised to ship sometime this summer.
