With getting free whoppers and allowing access via all types of technologies, it's really no wonder Facebook is so popular. "When we first started Facebook almost five years ago, most of the people using it were college students in the United States. Today, people of all ages, grandparents, parents and children use Facebook in more than 35 different languages and 170 countries and territories." said the CEO Mark Zuckerberg. After only five years, the site has reached 175 million "active" users.
Mark Zuckerberg founded Facebook while he was a student at Harvard University. The website membership was initially limited to Harvard students, but was later expanded to other colleges in the Boston area, the Ivy League, and Stanford University. A bit later in history they expanded further to include any university student, then high school students, and, finally, to anyone aged 13 and over.
Facebook has met with some controversy over the past few years. It has been blocked intermittently in several countries including Syria and Iran.It has also been banned at many places of work to increase productivity. Privacy has also been an issue, and it has been compromised several times and not to mention is plagued with viruses from time to time. It is also facing several lawsuits from a number of Zuckerberg's former classmates, who claim that Facebook had stolen their source code and other intellectual property.
However, the bad news aside, the site definitely deserves its bragging rights. The company based out of California has over 700 employee's and brought in an estimated $300 million last year from ad revenue, clearly they are doing something right.
