Amazon last month released the Amazon Kindle 2, their latest generation of E-Book reader. This past week they released an application in the Apple App Store called, Amazon Kindle. This leads me to my next question, when is the desktop version of the Amazon Kindle coming? Could it already be "in the works"?
One of the new features on the Kindle 2 is the new WhisperSync technology. WhisperSync allows synchronization of data between Kindles, iPhones, and iPod Touches currently - as these are the only devices that support Kindle E-Books. With this Whispersync technology already in place and working, why not move on to PC's and Mac's next for a desktop version of the Kindle? I think this is a very plausible question and one that could be in the works at Amazon already.
Having Kindle on the Desktop would allow avid readers to move from one device to the other without any constraints. This means I could wake up in the morning, grab my coffee and Kindle 2 to read the New York Times at the table then head to work and finish reading the paper when I got into the office from my desktop or laptop. Maybe you are traveling and don't want to take your expensive Kindle 2 along for the ride and your tired of reading on the small iPhone screen? Having Kindle 2 on the Desktop would certainly be a viable alternative.
Amazon may not want to bring Kindle to the Desktop on the fears of DRM. Instead of a full desktop version, they could offer a web version that is accessible anywhere in the world. I think users would go for that just as well.
Regardless if a Desktop or Web version is coming, one this is for sure - I do not expect Amazon to be stopping with Apple products. I think we will soon hear from them of a Kindle for the Windows Mobile and Palm users and then onward to other possibilities.
The Amazon Kindle 2 went on sale February 23rd, 2009 at a price tag $359.00. The new Kindle features improved battery life, 20 percent faster page-refreshing, a text-to-speech option to read the text aloud, and overall thickness reduced from 0.8 to 0.36 inches. It has 2 GB of internal memory of which 1.4 GB is user-accessible and can hold up to 1,500 books. You can purchase the Kindle 2 from Amazon.com. You can grab Kindle for the iPhone and iPod Touch from the App Store (iTunes Link).
