According to sources close to Amazon (AMZN), the company plans to unveil a new larger-screened Kindle this Wednesday, May 6th 2009. A news conference was recently scheduled by Amazon for Wednesday at 10:30 AM in NYC at Pace University, which coincides with the launch date.
The Kindle 2, which is currently available from Amazon.com, is great for reading novels but a larger screen could prove to be beneficial when reading newspapers, periodicals, and larger format books.
Color is one feature that has been missing ever since the first Kindle was released and users probably won’t find it with Kindle 2.5 (as I like to call the larger Kindle) but we may see a color-capable screen with Amazon Kindle 3.0 later down the road.
RTF Files Via Email To Kindle
Another interesting fact came up when Amazon stated in their blog that starting May 4th,
“in addition to the existing list of supported file types (DOC, HTML, JPEG, GIF, PNG, BMP, TXT, AZW, MOBI, PRC), you can send RTF files to your Kindle email address for convenient wireless delivery. In addition to the existing experimental support of PDF, you can also send DOCX files for conversion. Some complex PDF and DOCX files might not format correctly on your Kindle.”
They also modified the fee associated with sending documents wirelessly to the Kindle as the fee is now based on the size of your file. You will be charged 15 cents per megabyte via the Whispernet service and it will be rounded up to the next whole megabyte.
“If you would like to download your personal documents for free, or if you are not in a wireless area, you can continue to send attachments to “name”@free.kindle.com to be converted. These documents will be e-mailed to your computer at the e-mail address associated with your Amazon.com account login.”
