We've all heard about it, we've all dreamed about it, but now it's official and it's coming sooner rather than later - The Google Chrome Operating System. The Google Chrome OS will be based off of the Google Chrome Browser and will feature a Linux Kernel that boots to a new window manager and from there runs the browser.
Google Chrome OS will of course be open source and will target netbooks. It will be designed to run on both ARM and x86 platforms and Google apparently is already working with partners to bring the OS on a number of netbooks next year.
"Google Chrome OS is a new project, separate from Android. Android was designed from the beginning to work across a variety of devices from phones to set-top boxes to netbooks. Google Chrome OS is being created for people who spend most of their time on the web, and is being designed to power computers ranging from small netbooks to full-size desktop systems. While there are areas where Google Chrome OS and Android overlap, we believe choice will drive innovation for the benefit of everyone, including Google." Google Blog said.
Why build the Google OS? Because users want speed, security, and simplicity. That's exactly what Google is designing the OS to be. It allows for ultra fast start-up times so you can be on the web within seconds of starting up your computer. It's minimal, as not much is needed to connect your computer to the cloud where all of your applications, sites, and other programs live. Instead of using Word, you can use Google Docs or Zoho, or Google Calendar for your calendaring application. Why use an email client? Who's still using those? You simply use GMail or some other web based free email provider.
Everything that we do is in the cloud anyway, Google Chrome OS simply provides us with an cloud-based operating system that bridges the gaps between the hardware-world to the software-world and ultimately to the cloud.
