Amazon Kindle 2 Price Slashed to $299

Amazon yesterday slashed the price of its Amazon Kindle 2 E-Book reader by $60 bringing the price of the unit from $359 down to $299. This is the first price cut ever to the Kindle and Amazon said that they were able to do this because they have increased sales and have therefore lowered manufacturing costs.

With the Kindle 2 being priced at just under $300 bucks, will this price point magically open the doors to a wider audience? I tend to think not. If you have anyone willing to spend $300 or more for an e-book reader, they would probably just as easily spend another $60 or even for that matter go for the gold and get the new Kindle DX which is significantly more.

The Kindle devices main competition comes from the Sony Reader which is priced at $310 but they also have fierce competition from other devices like Netbooks which are at the same price point and even cheaper. You also have new start-up company's popping up that are offering $300 PC tablet devices and then lets not forget about Apple, they are apparently are working on a new tablet device as well.

I think the price cut is Amazon's attempt at getting the Kindle back into the news, which they have done. What they haven't done is provide sales numbers to backup their "success" of the Kindle that prompted in the lower pricing to begin with.
