Nissan could beat GM to the market with the first mass produced electric vehicle (EV-CAR) in the United States. Nissan's newest prototype the EV-11 is built on the Versa Hatchback which provides four doors, plenty of cargo room, and can go up to 93 miles on a full charge.
GM says it's Chevy Volt EV will not hit the market until late next year when it unveils its 2011 vehicles. However, if Nissan can beat GM to the market in the USA then they will have the upper-leg on the EV competition.
The Nissan Versa EV Hatchback will have 206 lb-ft of torque and a 108 horsepower motor. The battery packs sit under the floor to give the car all of the cargo space that the Versa has.
One of the really cool electronic features of the car is that it has an integrated navigation system but not just an ordinary one. This advanced nav system will continuously provide the driver with feedback on how far they can drive based on their current driving conditions. It can also inform the driver if their programmed destination is too far for the car to drive and where in the route the car could possibly run out of charge.
Regardless if Nissan beats GM to the market in the U.S., one thing is certain - I really love the competition. Not only will this allow for better and more efficient electric cars but it will also help drive the costs of them down.
